Speech-Language Services: Information for Patients

Where is the clinic?
The Speech Clinic is located on the third floor of the Miller building at the KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan. Please see the maps and directions page.

When is the clinic open?
An appointment in advance is necessary, as walk-in hours are not offered. Scheduling staff are available 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Request an appointment

Where do I park?
Parking is available in the Olathe Parking Garage located at the corner of Olathe Boulevard and Cambridge Street. Please view the map and directions page for more information. Present the parking pass at your appointment for validation. Parking is $3.00 with validation.

Do I need a referral?
A physician's referral is not required if the appointment is for basic speech evaluation or speech therapy. However, a referral is required for patients using Medicare or if scheduling a swallow evaluation. Please call 913-588-5937 to determine if a referral is necessary.

Payment and insurance coverage
Payment is accepted by check only. Please make checks payable to "University of Kansas." Sorry, the clinic cannot accept credit cards for payment at this time.

Is health insurance accepted?
We accept Medicare, Medicaid, Kansas Statewide Farmworker Health, and most private health insurance plans. Please contact the clinic to see if your health insurance provides coverage for your visit.

What do I bring to my first visit?
First-time patients should arrive 10-15 minutes before the appointment time to complete paperwork and bring the following items:

  • Insurance card and personal identification
  • Printed and completed questionnaire for adult patients or child patients.
  • List of questions for the clinician
  • List of current medications with dosage and time of day taken
  • Parking ticket for validation

What can I expect at my first visit?
When arriving at the clinic, a copy of the patient's insurance card will be taken. If not already completed (see above), the adult or child questionnaire will be completed.

The clinician will complete an assessment and meet with the patient to discuss goals and provide recommendations for next steps.

The initial appointment takes approximately one and a half hours for children and adolescents, and three hours for adults. Based on the outcome of the first session, the patient may be scheduled for a follow-up appointment or referred to an appropriate provider in the patient's local area.

Family members, significant others, or friends are welcome.

We ask that patients make child care arrangements for small children so that the evaluations can proceed in a timely fashion.
