Driving and Mobility Services

Driving is a valued occupation in the US. The share of drivers older than 65 years of age is projected to increase to 25% by 2025. We aim to rehabilitate drivers and assess fitness to drive.

Services

  • Each client receives a personalized assessment and intervention plan.

  • Clinical driving evaluations (driving performance, brake-reaction time, skills relevant to driving)

  • Advice on car modifications and equipment aids; for example, wide-angled mirrors to improve visibility

  • Driving rehabilitation programs with strategies on how to overcome difficulties with driving

  • Advice on alternative modes of transport available

  • We can arrange for practical, behind-the-wheel assessment, as required.

  •

Referrals

To ensure clients are medically able to undergo evaluation, a referral from a physician is required prior to first appointment at this clinic.

To request a fitness to drive evaluation, please fill out this driving referral form.

The Process

Upon identification of a driving need or concern:

  • Physician sends referral to Driving and Mobility Services clinic at KU Medical Center.

  • Clinic staff contact client to schedule driving assessment.

  • After initial driving assessment, additional simulation and/or evaluation may be recommended, including time spent behind-the-wheel of a vehicle on the road.
