Carol Washington's extensive leadership experience is reflected in her professional contributions to physician practice development and operations, clinical quality improvement and outcomes measurement, project management, work flow analysis and redesign, and group facilitation. She has been invited to serve as a panelist on numerous committees that examine the recruitment and retention of minority health care professionals, such as RWJ -WISTREC Partnership for Training Program (1999), Dr. Elizabeth Carnegie Conference (1999), National Black Nurse’s Conference (1999-2000), and Inroads/Upwards Bound College Program-Regional Conference (2001-2002)

Washington is an Advanced Practice Nurse with more than 15 years of combined clinical and management experience. She has worked as a clinician and administrator in both the community and private sector.

Her professional areas of interest involve:

  • work flow analysis and redesign
  • quality / performance improvement and outcomes measurement
  • evidence-based strategies to promote health
  • prevention and management of chronic disease for at-risk populations
  • recruitment and retention of minority health care professionals

Washington has served as an examiner for both the Malcolm Baldrige Quality Award, and Wisconsin Forward Award, is an active member of the Sigma Theta Tau, Greater Kansas National Black Nurses Association, American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) and the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA).

Washington comes to the KU School of Nursing after being Director of Operations at Saint Luke’s Medical Group. She was responsible for administrative oversight, management of multiple physician practice groups and multi-specialty practices (such as Family Practice, Internal Medicine and OB-GYN), financial management, human resources, and facilities management as well as strategic and long range planning.
